BBQ location MOVED due to bad weather

Unfortunately its been raining heavily this morning rendering the chances of running an effective BBQ in a field nill. It is also likely to continue raining, sometimes heavily, during the day. Consequently we are moving the BBQ to Bucko’s house in coventry where we can very easily move to the warm indoors during rainy spells. People on campus will be able to get a lift from Tesco at 12.30. Otherwise there is a map, which can be used for direction, as maps have been for the past goodness knows how many years…

BFL

The BFL marches steadily closer, and there are a few things to announce before it all kicks off.

Power issues

Due to power constraints we will only be allowing you to bring one out of the following: 2nd monitor, fan, laptop, file server, console. If you do choose to turn up with more than one of them, you will be asked to wait and the power draw of all your equipment for the LAN will be measured. If this is below 360W, you will be allowed to use all your equipment. Otherwise we shall discuss what you can use at any one time. However, I would ask that as a general rule you stick to the one item only policy, to save on time and unnecessary faffing.

Arrival time and Signup

The final signup count is set at 50.

Out of courtesy I would ask that you arrive by 10pm on the Monday of the BFL (unless you are one of the handful not arriving on Monday) or send me an email to let me know that you will be late. To give the best deal to those on the reserves list your place will be forfeit if you do not arrive by 10pm or let me know that you’re going to be late. This will allow me to get those on the reserves list on where possible. That said, if you are on the reserves list, do not assume you will have a place, as this is reasonably unlikely to happen. If you are not coming if you could unsignup as quickly as possible, again to allow reserves the best deal.

On a further note, signups and the seating plan will be finalised on Friday at 6pm. This will give people who have serious issues with the seating plan to contact me if they need to move.

Pizza order

There is a pizza order up for the first night, from Sicily pizza, as Pizza Hut was so expensive last time we ordered.

Pub social

There will be a trip to Varsity at 6pm on the Tuesday. This is usually a popular way to get dinner during the LAN, so sign up (although not necessary) and come along.

PAINTBALL!!!!

Dear all, since some interest was registered in the Paintball Event on our website, Compsoc, in coordination with the Paintball Society, will be holding a social on 23rd June. This takes place between 8am – 5pm at the National Paintball Fields in Birmingham. We need a big crowd to turn up with fire in their bellies, to defend the land of the free and home of the brave! Or something. In order to signup you need to use our esteemed Student’s Union’s event system.

Total price is £33 and includes the full day, 500 paintballs and travel. Can you email the exec if either you have a car, or if you have difficulty signing up through the union system.

Hope to see you all there, and more bruised than me by the end!

BFL Signups

As I’m sure many of you are aware, as we approach the end of term 3 we also approach the busiest event in the Compsoc calendar: the BFL / Mega LAN, a 5 day LAN running from Monday 25th June to Friday 29th. This is our most oversubscribed event of the year, and so I am giving you fair warning that signups will be opening at 12:00pm midday on Sunday 3rd June for members and 12:00pm midday on Sunday 10th June for guests. For fellow freshers, be amply warned that the BFL fills up pretty sharpish, so get signup camping at 12:00.

For those of you who have been around for much longer, there will be a slight tweaking to the signup setup this year. As it will be last busy busy week of term, many people are only willing to commit a few days to the BFL, rather than the 5 that it runs for. To this end, there will be a full week event, as well as an event for each day. If you are not coming for the whole week then simply sign up to each of the days you will be attending, otherwise sign up for the week long event. The idea is to get the best tradeoff between ease of seating plan and fitting as many people in as possible.
