Membership cards

The laminates got sent back because we hadn’t picked them up, so we will dispense with membership cards (for this year at least). James to put a page on the website where you can enter your uni ID to get an e-mail telling you your membership number and user code. There should also be an option to be sent a new password.

Bowling

Chris and Tom still need to find out more precise details about this.

ITS

If there is a problem with getting the full 16GB quota, we should at least try to get something as a temporary measure, even if it’s only 1GB or 2GB. Phil to mail ITS again on the subject.

Gaming

There followed a lengthy discussion about how to make gaming sessions more popular. One idea was to turn one of the gaming sessions into a pub social, though this might not be practical – we could ask the people that turn up to gaming if they think it is a good idea. Another idea was to hold tourneys/ladders to generate interest, with the added incentive of prizes. Starcraft, LB3D, Doom, Quake, Halflife, UT ladders were all muted as possibilities, as well as Q3A doubles on 1 computer and various racing games (e.g. TOCA etc.). For those of these games which we haven’t tried, we should try to get these working before the end of term, so that we can start the ladder/s with the new term. This stuff probably to be announced at the LAN.

LAN

We now have over 20 signups. In the long term, these signups should be restricted to those people that should be able to sign up (cough cough Mendoza). People should make sure that they bring just their box, and 1 laptop if absolutely necessary. Chris to look into buying a big power cable. We will start the LAN (once everyone is set up) with a UT tourney, to be played to the end on Friday night. We also want to hold a Warcraft 3 tourney, either 1v1 or if enough interest 2v2.

LUG

The layout for the leaflet has been done. “Jamie Webb sucks” – David B AND James. James to mail Jake, and organise printing the leaflets on the DCS printers. For those people in the LUG that need to join Compsoc, they have a week to do so before being struck off the LUG mailng list.

Passwords

Phil needs to change the passwords, as we have had the current ones (particularly the suahu one) for quite a while. Details to be discussed at the next meeting.

Spending

Compsoc is going to invest in 6 surge-protected 4-way 10m power leads for use at LANs. Chris to to this. We also want to buy a UPS as a safety precaution, ideally a 2 minute one. Adam to investigate.

Molotov

Phil to set up the public FTP.

And that’s that.
By the way, when are we having the next meeting?

Membership cards

The laminates have arrived in the student shop – Henry to pick these up. Chris to take the receipt to Student Union and get the money back. The cards will be difficult to distribute – put a note in the next newsletter saying cards can be collected at future Compsoc events (LANs, gaming etc.) but people will need the printout from the union compsoc website.

Finance cards

Tom and Dave got the other one last week. David B is not on it but that’s not crucial. Tom to keep hold of it for the moment.

LUG

The LUG people have agreed to join Compsoc and the socs. fed. James to compile a list of the people that need to do so and David B to mail them. Compsoc owes James 8 pounds for cds given to the LUG. These to be distributed as demo cds in the CS120 lecture in week 8. There are plans for a leaflet, which would be printed either in Lazerlizard or in DCS (using Jake’s or Jingly’s printer credits). Phil to create a mailing list for LUG announcements. Next term the LUG are doing an installfest – installing Linux for people who don’t have it but want it.

ITS

We are still waiting for a response on the quota for the suahu account. Phil to re-email them on the subject. We are expecting an e-mail from them on Monday saying when Insomnia can be installed, if not, Phil to e-mail them.

Molotov

We are now hosting theSheep as previously agreed. The software has been installed on their account, and they have bought extra space. Smokeh has apologised for his transgressions and promised to sort them out. Phil to set up a proxy server for Compsoc users on piazza, authenticated by Molotov username and password.

Newsletter

Notification of the cancellation of karting due to lack of interest. This event to be changed to bowling sometime in week 9. Chris and/or Tom to investigate the necessity of booking the Leamington bowling place. Mention the LUG‘s installfest and demo cd giveaway. Dave to finish and mail out after the meeting.

LAN

James to put a news item advertising this on the website, and people should indicate if they are bringing laptops on their signup.

Tutorials

Ideally, we should try to have tutorials which relate to the course as directly as possible. Dave to mail the exec list asking for volunteers to give tutorials.

Misc

Future exec meetings will be moved back to start at 7:30pm (don’t be late!). Chrispy to mail out the minnits of the last meeting.

And we’re done for another week.

General

Tom Cropper to join Compsoc (or else). Chris Fanning sucks for misplacing the Pad.

ITS

Have officially agreed (again) to host our second server. Insomia will be placed in the piazza server room (hopefully within a few weeks). Phil and Henry will be able to gain access to the room if necessary. As far as the quota for the suahu account is concerned, they have promised to take action (although it was unclear what the action would be). For the moment, games which don’t fit on H: will be put on FTP (preferably by Phil). Phil also to give Henry a copy of the agreement between Compsoc and ITS. Finally, anybody bringing food/drink to gaming sessions will be advised to keep it concealed as much as possible.

Piazza

Warwickpiazza has been seriously scaled back, so advertising Compsoc on their website may not be that helpful. Once Insomnia is up and running it would be a good idea to advertise it on the residence newsgroup, and perhaps Jamie Webb’s site. For the start of next year, we should try to get a mention in the Warwickpiazza welcome pack. Phil to hassle ITS about getting Insomnia put in, as this is a crucial thing we are waiting for at the moment.

Molotov

theSheep have asked us if we can host their website; in principle this should be no problem. They shoudl also be aware of the Molotov Terms of Service. If they need more than the requisite 20MB of space, we can charge them as though they were members (i.e. £2.50 for 100MB). In return for our hosting the site, we should have a prominent advertisement on their site. Phil to talk to them to find out more details about what they want, let them know what we can do etc.
The LUG has a mailing list and website on Molotov, with their own e-mail to follow soon. The members list for the LUG and Compsoc are updated daily, according to something funky that James did. A few days ago, it was discovered that they user “Smokeh” has used the (copyrighted) menu system developed for the Compsoc website. He also has a webcam which is contributing significantly to Molotov’s load (up to 10 requests/sec). James to ‘talk’ to him about both issues, i.e. threaten him with the ToS. Lastly, Phil has fixed it so that members@... should be working now.

Finance cards

David B, Dave and Tom to meet up next week and get the other finance card.

LAN

Rooms have been booked – LIB2 Friday 7pm to Sunday 10pm, LIB1 Saturday 1pm to Sunday 10pm. Henry to check the music server’s coding to make sure that single tracks don’t get knocked down the list, and try to make it so that the same song can’t get played too regularly. Henry also to bring a list of David B’s queued tracks for the last LAN (if the logs are still available).
