Molotov

This is now hosting the Ceilidh (or whatever) website and e-mail. Once molotov2 comes online, 107’s function is to remain the same (minus the game servers it is currently running). Phil to remove distributed.net from 107 to reduce its load. Phil to set up pe0ns@ e-mail. Phil to play with the appropriate script to remove incoming junkmail.

Molotov2

Despite suggestions of ‘cocktail’ or ‘blob’, there will a competition amongst compsoc members as to the name of the second compsoc server. Entries are to be by e-mail to the exec, and Dave to put this into the newsletter. The current list of stuff we have for molotov2 is as follows: case and network card (Chrispy); chip, motherboard and graphics cards (Fade); power supply (Sariel); memory (H); hard disk (Phil, Chrispy and H all possibles). The plan is to give all the stuff to Phil as soon as we can to have everything together in the same place, ready to put together. Once up and running, molotov2 will run the game servers and a backup of the website.

Warwickpiazza

As stated previously, they have agreed to our demands and we have to remember to get back to them at the very beginning of next term. There was some discussion of producing a webpage giving details of our game servers etc., to which there would be a link on warwickpiazza, so James to do this. On a different note, apparently warwickpiazza have acquired a 320GB network hard disk thingy for student use, which we may be asked to admin. Chris: “I think we should offer them sexual favours as long as we get the 320GB out of them”

LUG

Apparently Coventry LUG are thinking about maybe starting to get their act together and actually doing something. They have plans to meet, probably at the Whitefriars pub (somewhere in inner Cov). Henry to attend once Jake confirms the time and place. Dave to put info about them in the newsletter, including their irc channel.

LAN-related stuff

Chris volunteered to run any Q3A/SC/UT tourneys at the BFL, Jake also volunteered to run any UT tourney. Chris still to find the power limit for the LIB-rooms. We agreed to buy the 24-port switch being offered by OEM Redstore, Chris to order it.

Suahu/suada

These accounts have been moved to being the onion’s responsibility, which is fine as regards the suada account. However, the suahu account needs to be with ITS in order for us to run gaming sessions somewhere other than Union North. As it stands, the suahu account remains with ITS until October 14th, after which we would be game-session-less. Hence we have asked Ian Brown (onion IT bloke) to ask ITS to continue the suahu account. Henry to mail ITS requesting same and generally ask them what the hell is going on. Also ask them to transfer ownership of the account to him.

ill

We are running a trip to this event. Currently Chrispy, Cyphus, Rellik and Fade are down to go. Details to be put in the newsletter by Dave.

BBQ

This is now unlikely to be held on Saturday of week 9. James to look into exam times for CS and Maths in weeks 8 & 9 so that we can propose a different time for this event. Henry to replace missing charcoal briquettes (cough, cough). H to buy packyderm for BBQing purposes (Goddamnit, this is what happens when somebody else gets hold of The Pad of Doom)

The meeting was commenced with the ritual handover of monies to Phil for the replacement of 107’s power supply. Although Henry did forget to bring the money and hence still owes Phil ?5.

S7

Lots of games were played, including JK2, Dungeonsiege, Q3A etc. Chrispy agreed to try to track down the power limit for LIB2, and the number of signups will be kept the same at least until then.

BFL

We decided that, as this year when LANs moved from being 1 day/overnight to being all weekend, in the future we want to try to move towards having all LANs of this size, to allow for greater numbers of signups. There was some discussion of using the wall sockets in the LIB-rooms but this could be tricky as the university probably wouldn’t approve and there would be security issues as well. As previously discussed, a rota will be drawn up for exec sleeping patterns over the course of the LAN (covering both rooms). This to ensure that both rooms are attended at all times. We also plan to run several (probably 2) tourneys at this event, so attendees should vote on which games these should be (Dave to put in the next newsletter). Prior to this event the society needs to buy a switch/switches: Chrispy to investigate the prices of 8/16/24 port switches. Compsoc also to hire a Jedi Knight for this LAN.

Molotov

Phil is planning to reinstall this over the summer hols, obviously minimising the down time. This should be restricted to a couple of days, and it WILL of course be up for the start of next term.

Molotov2

Hence forth to be known as Blob (108 – geddit?). Various exec members have bits. In particular, Chrispy has case and network card, Fade has P3 500 chip&board and graphics card. Thus if we can ‘persuade’ H to part with some of his vast quantities of memory we only require a hard disk. Phil has enquired and ITS would be willing to host Blob, although there would likely be some strings attached in the form of limited access to the server. Blob likely to be run mainly as a gaems server but probably with a backup of the website on it for emergencies.

Publicity

Phil has spoken to warwickpizza and they are willing to advertise our game servers. We need to follow up on this to ensure that the advertising is in place for when the pe0ns start next term.

Next Compsoc Exec Meeting

City Arms, Monday at 1pm. To be followed by the handover of the old exec to the new exec at union north.

Thought for the day

Never argue with a fool, people might not know the difference

A draft newsletter should follow tomorrow.

Molotov2

We are missing a fan promised by Chrispy, and a motherboard and CPU from Fade. Phil to put Molotov2 together by week 9/10 (or during Summer holidays). The naming competition is still in progress.

Chrispy

Is lame for not turning up to this meeting.

Suahu

Still no response from Rachel Parkins.

LIB power etc.

Chrispy is lame again as we have not heard from him about this or the switch. Dave to talk to him.

BFL

Fade to write a sleeping rota and mail it to the mailing list.
* Possible gaming competitions are:
* JK2 3v3 or CTY (Fade would admin)
* UT (Jake would admin)
* Starcraft doubles (Jake again)
* Q3A doubles (Chrispy admin)
Seating will be decided at the pre-LAN. Silver to bring a list of the signups

WarwickLUG

A LUG group has formed and had planned to form a new society starting next year. They were asked if they would like to become a part of our society and have agreed subject to a number of demands:
* a representative on the exec
* a separate mailing list
* separate advertising of their events (but with Compsoc logo on posters)
* space at the fresher’s fayre
* a subcommittee
* any software they require placed on 107
* webspace on 107, on a website linked to ours

It was broadly agreed that these were fairly reasonable, and Phil would meet their ringleader (T. Edwards) in DCS on Wednesday 5th

Constitution

“Never try to do anything at an exec meeting because it won’t get done” – AB. Jake to re-write the constitution.

Academia

Phil is still talking to ITS about the .computing newsgroup. He should get a NNTP basic server set up when possible. James to do the web interace for these. There was also talk of an article database, where articles would be submit through a web interface (another job for James) to different categories etc. The database would be useful for general academic stuff and prove that we DO actually do academic stuff (not just talk about it). There was also some talk of doing Q & A sessions focussing on course-related stuff. These would be best held just before major coursework or exam time. We could also try and provide a (second-hand) bookshop service.

Advertising

As things stand, piazza would be a good place to advertise on. Henry also to do talks in Comp. Sci., Maths, Engineering and Physics lectures at the start of next term. We shold print around 150 of the usual introductory booklets that we do, and put up posters around campus to raise awareness of the society.

Sponsorship

Henry to reply to the Molzi guys asking for more details. Henry to also find out about sponsorship prices from the Union. There was talk of having companies come and talk about careers stuff, e.g. Chris Salmon’s company. We should try talking to IBM and people like Mike Collishaw and Mike Squire about this.
