The exec meeting started with a 1024ms silence, to respect the passing of a dear friend. With the release of Windows XP, and the Win9x/ME line being finally phased out, the days of one of our greatest childhood friends are now past.

RIP MS-DOS.

Campus Gaming League

An idea was mooted that, in the absence of inter-university gaming, we could start a Warwick Gaming League, with teams from around the university competing.

However, due to a lack of a server, this will be put on hold for now. To be discussed in IRC on Molotov when it is up.

“That sounds reasonable, I would concur with that decision’’
* Toastie

Molotov

Tom and Henry to go and speak to Chris Tilbury personally, as we have had no reply yet.

Tom’s Box

Basically, it needs to go back. Alexis to hopefully take it back sometime, as he lives in Leam and no-one else does. Apart from Tom.

Chrispy may take the box back if he’s feeling generous.

LAN

The LAN went well, however there were very few turnups. Many of the first years mailed in the last day cancelling their signup.

Jake to talk to Dave Capps and Ann Jarvis about borrowing Anime’s projector, because we’re not allowed to use the AV one, and we wouldn’t dream of disobeying Onion regs.

Signup Policy

Since the LAN was most disappointing, we’re going to alter our signup policy.

Those who DNA‘d at the LAN will be put at the bottom of the signup list.

To un-signup for an event, one must do so two full days – 48hrs before the start of the event. Failure to do so will count against that person at the next event.

All Nighter

Aah yes. The All Nighter, the biggest Compsoc event of the year. Well, so far anyway.

This term’s FragFest will be held in Week 7 – Friday 16th of November at 8pm until Sunday 18th of November at 10pm. The exec to get there by 7 for setup.

Nutsy to book.

We’ll have the B-rooms: B21[2–4].

We will also run some tournies – Quake 3, Counter Strike and Starcraft to name but a few.

One option considered was to allow signups for one of the two weekend days; priority would be given to those attending the entire weekend.

Publicity

We have none! We need some! Leet publicity skillz!

Jake to do posters.
* Chris Smith to put Gaming in The Word
* Chris Smith to put all nighter in The Word when confirmed

Photosoc

We’ve been approached by the Photographic Society, offering their services as photographers for our event/s, as their members need practice. After this, we have the option (although are under no obligation) to buy some photos.

We’ll invite them to the All Nighter. Toaster to mail.

Karting

Karting, the past-time enjoyed by refined, calculated, experienced racing drivers and nutcases alike will be part of the Compsoc calendar.

We’ll got to the Coventry Speedway, as Henry’s been there before, and it’s a good place.

H to find out some details and ring up.

JR to put the details on the website.

To be booked provisionally for Wednesday Week 8 – 21 November.

CS Tournament

Continuing in the successful line of CS Tournies, we’re gonna have another one. All participants will be required to play on University machines, in ITS011/019.

To save admin time, the teams should be chosen beforehand if at all possible.

The cost will be free, provisionally. It will probably be hosted on Friday of Week 2.

Funds

We owe money. However, as Alexis wasn’t here we don’t have exact figures. However this is what leet bookkeeper in absentia H reckons:

  • Henry – £55
  • Chris Smith – £200
  • Jake – £60
  • Steve Gates – £20

Aberystwyth

Last week, Jake was mailed by the president of the Aber Compsoc, who was frustrated with the lack of response to his attempts to converse with other Compsocs.

They are organising online chats with Cool People, and have invited us to “attend’’.

They’ve also badgered their Uni’s ITS to lift their firewall; as a result they can now play against us! Woo!

Jake to culture relationship.

Tutorials

Swing

Guest speaker Chris Salmon’s pulling power remained as effective as ever, and the JFC lecture was as well attended as a Kid America gig in Siberia. There were seven attendees. We think that many factors contributed to this, a major one being the publicity.

As a consequence, we’ll re-run the tutorial in Term 2.

Other Tutorials

The HTML tutorial will be done over two weeks, starting in Week 7, Mon/Tue at 5:00pm.

PHP in term 2.

Spam

Henry to mail that company with all the details.

Clothes

We’ll try to get sponsorship.

OSP

We’re having a whole bunch of meetings to deal with a whole bunch of stuff on a whole bunch of dates. But not week 7 ‘cos it’s the LAN :-)

Next meeting

Will be at 2:30 in the City Arms.

1st Social

The first social took place in South Central the night preceding this execeutive meeting. Well, the word “social’’ should be applied in the loosest sense, as the turnout was low, when compared to last year.

Next year, the secretary will send the e-mail out earlier.

Of all the members there, they were interested in the Open Source project, gaming, and the tutorials.

LAN

Lan signups were filled extremely quickly, and the waiting list is currently five long.

We’re gonna try and get around this situation by asking if anyone has laptops. For every two laptops that are gonna be brought, we’ll allow one more PC. Becuase laptops consume exactly 0 watts of power.

Tom has sent the booking form in; at the time of writing, a pseudo-confirmation had been received.

Jake to talk to AnimeSoc about borrowing their projector.

LaserQuest

We’ve got an approximate number of 15–20 people. Nutsy to take this to the nice people in Coventry and tell them to reserve us an arena.

We’ll meet up at 2:00 for 2:30 in Rootes Reception, and busses will be taken because cars are Anti-Social, and we all know how Alexis drives.

Alexis wants to be put on the signup list for LaserQuest and the LAN, along with Nick & James.

Campus Gaming

Chris Smith mentioned that at the moment, gaming in halls is pretty disparate, because people can’t accept incoming connections, and can’t get organised. We can do something to fill this.

The first thing we should do is get Molotov set up as a game/IRC server. This would be an easily accessible point for people to meet and frag.

Another idea is to have a physical time and place that hall gamers meet, to chat and do stuff. This could potentially be another Compsoc social.

This would be followed up by a standard gaming time – e.g. 10:00 every evening. We could potentially develop an inter-hall gaming league.

Molotov

Henry has mailed Richard Bragg twice about replacing the server; he has forwarded the mail to Chris Tilbury, on whom we are waiting.

Aside from that, the server is ready to go.

Apps

The following apps are required:

  • CounterStrike: Alexis
  • UnrealTournament: H/Jake
  • Quake: Henry
  • Quake3: Henry
  • CSDoom: Henry
  • Distrubted.net: Henry

Tom Ward

Tom has now been added to the spam list, so he can find out what kind of fluff is growing in each exec member’s toenails. Because that’s what we discuss on the mailing list.

He also has all the passwords now.

Fish

Alexis to find out if we can get Chris Salmon back to do a presnetation as a Professional Java Developer. We’ll have to foot Chris’s bills; will the soc have to do this, or will the Union?

Potentially we would like Chris back on the Sunday of week four. The tutorials would have to be condensed into one two-hour session. This will be extremely challenging, particularly as the first tutorial was packed with information for an entire hour.

Less twenty-five minutes.

Tutorials

Swing will hopefully be held Sunday of Week 4. PHP and HTML back end of Term 1.

Jake Staines and James Ross to merge timetables and find a good time for both 2nd and 3rd year CS.

Open Source Project

The Open Source project will recommence at 6:00 on Sunday Evenings. Tom Cropper to make a block booking.

Signups

The current signup reigime will involve members e-mail compsoc@warwick.ac.uk with the subject “SIGNUP:’’.

Website

Signups will be the first thing done; currently the entire thing is static.

Bookshop

The current state of the bookshop is that the main part works, but the reviews section is a little dodgy. Considering BookshopV1 had no reviews section however, this is extremely good. Thankfully, the bookshop was not lost when Molotov’s hard disk died.

CAT5

CAT5 cable will be sold at 50p base, and then 50p per metre upto and including 10m. After 10m, the rate will be 40p per metre.

Sierra Leone

The details about the Sierra Leone project will be promoted to members in the newsletter.

Finance

Some people are owed some money by the union.

  • Chris Smith: £200 – Molotov.
  • Jake Staines: £95 – Photocopying, CAT5 stuff. Jake will make the
  • money back off the CAT5 cable then hand it over to Compsoc.
  • Henry: £55 – Heatsink and Case for Molotov

All persons have the receipts, but will wait until the capital budget form has been dealt with before handing them in.

Next meeting

Will be at 7:00 on Staturday 27 October.

Tech Dude

Following the complete list of nomination, we’ve decidede that Tom Ward will be our technical officer, with immediate effect.

Chris Fanning will be elevated to “LAN Dude’’, in a non-executive capacity.

Molotov

Terms and Conditions

These need writing. Jake to do them. They’ll basically include “Abide by ITS rules’’ and some other stuff that we can make up as we go along.

State Of

Molotov is currently up, and still using all of Tom Cropper’s hardware, save the hard disk.

We’ve also got Icecast, an mp3 streamer, with which it was suggested we could broadcast exec meetings.

“We could do competitions – ‘phone in when you hear Toaster Speak!’’
* Alexis

Buying

This evening there is a Computer Fayre, so we’re gonna go down and spend some dosh.

We’ve got a limit of £200 to spend. We will buy a 40G hard disk, Duron 950, motherboard, RAM and a case. This will mean that we can give Tom Cropper his machine back.

Chris Smith will pay for it, because he has an elastic credit card. And then give his receipt to Alexis for Sorting.

DBs

The mySQL database has been set up with a whole bunch of permissions. The following ammendments are required:

Webmaster to be given full access on compsoc

Jake to sort.

Law Society

The Law Society have mailed us asking if we can do a website. Henry to mail LawSoc asking what they want, so that the exec can decide on a quote.

Fresher’s Fayre

  1. signups were taken on the day; this is low compared to last year.

We’ve had several messages from people asking if they can / how to join. Chris “J’’ Smith to reply to these.

All the member books etcetera to be taken to socials.

Gaming

This weekend, everyone should go if they can. H to take the books and get some money.

Budget

The Union will refund any receipts we give them. No reply regarding Capital Budget form yet. Chris Smith to chase.

Equipment Form

We’re gonna hire out the barbeque.

Exec timing

  1. :00 for 2:30 every Wednesday. Just like this week!

Convention

James went and it lamed out. The £2.50 price of memberships now apparantly includes VAT. Therefore we potentially have only £2.13 per member to spend.

Alexis to complain about this.

First Social

The first social is in South Central at 7:00 on Tuesday the 16th. All the exec to turn up at around 6:15, apart from Jake who may turn up at 7:20.

LaserQuest

Wednesday of week 4. Tom Cropper to book.

LAN

Weekend of Week 4. Tom Cropper to book.

We’ll go for 9AM-10PM. members to arrive at 10am, so the exec can grab all the good tables. Non-members to be charged £5.

  1. max signup limit.

I9

I9, the next Uber-LAN is held in the middle of term. It’ll be noted on the site. The official Compsoc stance will be that it’s not a Compsoc event, but there may be lots of people from [UoW] going.

Cat5

Jake and H to buy a drum, heads, and make a shedload of money. When costs have been recovered, the equipment will probably become Compsoc’s property.

Society Emphasis

At the Fresher’s Fayre, we had a lot of people asking whether we did anything other than play games. It has been decided that in future we will try and put more focus no the academic side of our society.

Tutorials

  • Swing – Chris S to potentially come as a Pro Java Developer. Beginning of Term 2
  • Perl – Halfway through Term 2
  • PHP – End of Term 1

Gear

Matt Smith has a flyer from a company in Cambridge, who do polo shirts with logos etc for £10. They also do hooded hockey shirts etcetera.

Chris Smith to talk to Matt Smith about this.

Videogaming Society

Apparantly, the exec are a lot nicer this year. Jake is to investigate whether or not they’ve changed their name, and whether we can hook up with them for a couple of events maybe.

Budget

Over the summer, we found out that we had been denied our capital budget request for a server. Chris Smith went to see Richard from the Finance Office, who is looking into this for us.

Chris to follow this up.

TechDude

Our esteemed Technical Officer, Mr Tom Worley, isn’t with us this year. This means we need a new one1.

We currently have two applicants: Tom Ward and Chris Fanning. Matthew Stewart-Smith may also be interested. Henry to speak to Matt about this to guage interest.

The exec will decide upon a technical officer within two weeks. In the meantime, Tom Ward will be brutally used, as he is conveniently close, for general Tech purposes.

Server

Fixing

Molotov, our wonderful Linux server, is currently deader than seventies sideburns. And, as noted above, we have no tech dude to fix it.

Henry will mail Tim Clark about retrieving our beloved server, and will get together with Tom Ward to fix this server on Saturday after a significant dose of Alka Seltzer.

As the server is still down, we have no website. James Ross to make a temporary one for mimosa and the first years.

Buying

With the capital budget shot down in flames, we are left in rather a predicament with regards to actually obtaining a society account.

Tom Cropper has kindly agreed to loan the server for now, but not for the entire year. He has also agreed to maybe sell the server for a reasonable price.

If the capital budget form is not authorised, then we may use the membership money to pay for the server.

Switch

That guy who’s now left had, at the last count, got the Compsoc switch. The big, nice, 16-port switch.

Jingly Chris to speak to Puppy about encouraging Tom to return the society’s property.

Jingly Chris to buy a big cage to trap Tom.

Convention

The Onion, in all their infinite wisdom, have decided to waste six hours of each society’s lives by making them go to the Societies Convention, being held on Saturday the 6th of October.

Somehow, Social Sec Nutsy got away with not going to said convention; James Ross and Richard Colfer will go instead. Everyone else to buy them a drink in appreciation.

Fresher’s Fayre

Who

We reckon we’ll be at the Fresher’s Fayre on Monday of Week 2 at the back-left of the market place. A whole bunch of cards have been cut and the whole exec need to cut some more.

Everyone should show their face at the Fayre. James Ross and Richard Colfer are excused because they put up with the convention, although it would be nice to see them there.

With regards to float, everyone should bring along cash, and we’ll keep a record of it.

Backboard

Alexis to print two large compsoc logos to use in the center.

Jake to re-vamp last year’s stuff to look even better than it did before.

Forms

The forms supplied to us for keeping track of members are lame. Jake to do some more.

Booklets

Chris Smith went into Lazer Lizard, who would charge £40 for 300 booklets, including stapling and folding. They would, however, require a week’s notice.

Jake eventually got them done at the Copyshop in Earlsdon, because they were nice and quick (if not as cheap).

Cold Seal Pouches

Chris Smith to bring a big slicer to Jake and Henry’s house, where the entire exec must do some cutting.

The Onion Noticeboard

The Onion noticeboard is covered in a PHP tutorial poster. Jake Staines to put a selection of past activities up so that people can see what we do.

South Central

Our first social of the year is in South Central on Tuesday of week three, at 7:00pm. Rough plan for the evening: Jake says some words, we all introduce ourselves, and then mingle with some first years. Mmm, mingle.

Laser Quest

The traditional start-of-term Laser Quest will be taking place on Wednesday of week 4. Tom Cropper to book.

LAN

The first LAN of the year! Woo! This will take place during the Weekend of week four, from 9AM to 10PM on the Saturday in Lib1. No all-nighters yet, as we feel the first years need easing in.

Tom Cropper to book.

Gaming

So far, we don’t know whether we can play games in the ITS011. Tom Cropper to mail ITS (Rachael Parkins), asking whether we may continue the activity.

Cat5

It was suggested that we buy a large drum of Cat5 cable, a crimping tool an some heads, and then sell it to undercut everywhere else nearby.

Henry and Jake to find out whether we can buy it with last year’s money, and then go and get one.

Organisation

Jake has just realised that the Blue Folder Of Doom is a mess. A large mess in fact. One that must be sorted.

Jake to use his sparkly new finance card to buy some stationary and organise the folder.

Timetable

Everyone should mail Compsoc their availability. Henry to sort a time for the next meeting.

LAW Society

The Law Society have asked us to do a web page. We’ll carry this over to the next exec meeting.

Apologies for this being a really boring set of minutes, but it’s 11:00pm and I need to do a web-page for my third year project.
h5.

1 A new Tech officer that is, not a new Tom.
