s4 De-brief

As most of the exec were aware, last weekend was that of s4, our uber-LAN. So what did we think of it?

James reckoned that there wasn’t enough variation, and he had a point. There was a lot of Quake3, Starcraft, CS, OpFlash etc – but these are either FPS or RTS; there was little, for example, driving going on.

Another problem was that people kept ‘dipping in and out’. This could be solved with a time-share situation; one person brings a box and someone else can play on it also. The problem wwith this is that the box owner would have to be able to trust his timesharee. For this reason, it would be a private arrangement only.

It was noted at this point that Matt Stewart-Smith:

  • Uses the same root password for everything.
  • Is a fool for bringing a huge monitor and making Chris Smith carry it.

Apparantly the MP3 server roxored. However there were some bugs that JR will mail HS to fix. H to delete Nutsy’s account because he queues crap. Apparantly.

WRT the length of the LAN, some people felt that it was too long – however it was generally agreed that we would have one 50h LAN per term, and a couple of day-long LANs to tide people over.

Bee

Last LAN, Adam Chalkley didn’t turn up, having told us the night before. This LAN, Adam Chalkley didn’t turn up “‘cos he couldn’t be arsed’’. Jake to speak to him about this; he will be put to the bottom of the signup list for the next LAN. This kind of thing is not acceptable; if it occurs again then a ban may be in order.

Karting

After hassling the rest of the exec, Henry “McRae’’ Southgate managed to get a current total of 8 people on the signups for Karting. Rest of the exec to push this as much as possible.

We will meet at 1:00pm in Rootes Reception, to leave at 1:30, arriving to start by 2.

Molotov

Things to do

Firstly, ircd needs to be recompiled. This is to fix things like max nick length, max topic length, chanserv, nickserv etc.

Next, James has been having trouble with Apache; it’s set on an uber-secure setting, so whenever he wants to do something cool and funky he needs to edit the config file. Most of this is OK now though.

JR to speak to Chris Salmon about Tomcat.

Game Servers

Currently, the only port anyone can access any gameservers on is the cstrike port; obviously this sucks. Tom to keep looking into this, and to consider the fact that a firewall may be stopping access.

Members

We’ll advertise molotov in the next newsletter, and let people sign up. H to mail mailing list with lame-proof instructions to giving members accounts.

The quota will be set by default to 10M. 20M of additional space may be purchased for £5 a shot.

H to update the useradd script to do quotas.

Jake to put the remaining members into the database.

DB

James will copy the database across tomorrow. Tom will put PostgreSQL on instead of mySQL. Quite how these two operations will interact, and how it’ll all turn out afterwards, is anyone’s guess; I’m betting it won’t be pretty.

Perl modules needed.

For the record, the following items are case-sensitive in MySQL.
* database names
* table names

Also, the following items are not case-sensitive in MySQL.
* field names

In addition, a ‘show tables’ does not convert to lower-case.

I know this because I have just checked :-).

Website

The website has made no progress, due to lack of time on James’s behalf. James to do more stuff.

Refresher’s Fayre

Thanks to the unbelieveable turnup last year (1 more membership), we’re not going to be at the refresher’s Fayre this year.

Not even a little bit.

Money

Alexis to pay in Jingly’s recepit; H to give Alexis his recepit.

Nuff said.

Cat5

Woo! We’ve finally got a cheque from David Apthorpe. This is good news.

Tutorials

Jake will have the poster masters done by tomorrow morning; Toaster to meet Jake on campus at 11 to get the masters, photocopy them, and then distribute around campus with a liberal dash of parsley.

Games

When all the servers are up and running, we will advertise molotov as being a functioning game server, and to a big launch.

An IRC client is needed for gaming sessions.

We can advertise the counterstrike server and use it on gaming sessions; the address will be cstrike.warwickcompsoc.co.uk.

“We are not having elephants.’’
* Henry Southgate

“I don’t know; it’s been a while since it was bought up, we could at least discuss it.’’
* Tom Cropper

Molotov

Molotov is now installed in the Onion. Sadly, it’s not on a UPS, but atleast it’s now in.

Compsoc will do the maintainence for the server.

Tom to see Ian Brown with regards to:
* power cable
* root password
* what happens if something goes wrong

So the, with our fantastic server installed, what are we going to tell our members? We’ll tell them about the IRC and Quake3 servers.

Chris Smith to mail Tom Ward with what he wants from the server.

s4

Chris Smith to go and pester the room-bookings people.

Campus League

While a Campus League would be a really cool thing, we’ll start off with just random matches. The general theme will for people to be in the IRC servers from 10:00 most nights. We’ll grab a whole bunch of channels for each game.

Karting

Motorsport have grabbed week 8, so we’ll move to week 9. £10 deposits required from people.

Clothing

Since no-one was interested, we’ll scrap the idea. This is a shame, as they could have been very cool; sadly it’s not feasible to produce clothes for a small number.

Money

Chris Smith gave a receipt to Alexis for £195; he will pick up the cheque in a few days.

SSDO

Chris Smith went to see John Finnis about our CB form, and was told:

“It would help if you used the union more.’’
* John Finnis

This is cheek; we use the union regularly for tutorials and Open Source. We would use them for LANs if they allowed us to book overnight.

Website

The website is working fine on James’ machine. JR to FTP it up and put his funky Perl modules in /var/lib/perl.

The authentication is currently done on a 3-key basis: compsoc number, ITS login and university number. This will be replaced in due course with the cookie-based login that we had previously.

Tutorials

These will be 5:00 Mondays during weeks 9 and 10 in rooms 3 and 4.

Jake to do posters.

CAT 5

We’re doing quite well with CAT5 sales – but we won’t buy another roll just test. Dave Apthorpe is still “Busy’’; Alexis to keep chasing.

Before starting the meeting, various members of the exec familiarised themselves with the term “moebius’’, with regards to Jake’s onion ring.

Molotov

At the time of the meeting, Henry and Tom had bee nto see Chris Tilbury personally, but gained no success. H and T to go and see him again before the end of the week.

Phil Stoneman has leant Compsoc the camera in order for the server to be photographed.

s4 Booking

Tom and Jake have both booked the rooms; no reply has been received from room bookings yet. Henry to mail to chase them up.

Tourneys

Chispy will be the overall tournament organiser. The tourney will start with a free-for-all round, and then proceed to a bracket system.

The entry fee for the tournament will be a piece of confectionary. The winner will take most, with a small amount going to the second place player.

Chris also to talk to the caretaker about power; an approximation gives us 20 people in one room and five in the second.

Karting

H has rung the people but couldn’t get through. To keep trying.

People on the exec who would like to go:

  • Alexis
  • Chris
  • Chrispy
  • Jake
  • Nutsy
  • Toaster
  • James Ross

Tom Cropper to look into duty of care forms.

Capital Budget

Still no reply has been heard. Chris Smith to keep pestering and see Jon Finnis. If no satisfactory result occurs then we will go to the boar.

Gaming

We are now in ITS011. And apparantly the games are crap and we need new ones. Like Starcraft.

Campus Gaming

We’re gonna wait for Molotov before we do anything.

Clothes

Henry to write a piece on the newsgroup to see if there is any interest in Compsoc clothing.

Jake to put up a trial picture.

Website

The website is not ready to go yet; by Monday it should be OK. The menus aren’t dynamic at the moment, as that was a hefty task in itself.

CAT 5

We’re doing quite well with CAT5 sales – David Apthorpe is “Busy’’; Alexis to keep chasing.

We’ve sold more cable to Stuart and Toaster; this is a good thing.

Munny

All the money from memberships has been paid into the union. Jake to give the stubs to Ann Jarvis.
