1. Gaming/LANs

Gaming and the last LAN party have been going well – but we could do with more organisation at LANs, specifically with getting the network set up. A Hub was suggested, or a Switch – Baz to investigate the possibilities. We would need at least 8 sockets – probably no more would be needed since member’s hubs could be daisychained. Henry Southgate also mentioned at the last LAN that he may be able to bring a Linux box to act as a bridge. Talk to Henry nearer time of next LAN.

2. Chris’ House

It was minuted that Chris Salmon lived in a village where they were actually not allowed to place television aerials on the roof of their house. All laughed.

3. Money

Ryan claims that the financial situation is OK.
Books for membership need to be in by Friday (27th).
Chris Salmon was given £1 by Ryan to put in the pot.

4. OpenSource Project

Going well.
Sourceforge account opened by Chris Salmon – Chris to continue and set up all areas of the account that we need. Majordomo list was asked after, but there was no reply.
Likewise the possibilities of a Newsgroup or CVS account were investigated, but to no avail. The last two things are not so important with the SF account, however.

5. Bowling

Put forward until next week.

6. Java Classes

Concentrate on GUI. Chris Salmon to talk to Jarvis and ask about a room.

7. CS Tourney

James M to mail Jake when he has info ready, Jake to forward to members.

8. Pub Social

Arranged for tuesday of next week (31st of October), meeting up at 7pm in Rootes Reception. Going to Varsity from 7:10 onwards.

9. Karting

Baz still looking into Karting – probably. For all we know he’s simply sitting in his room eating Chris’ KitKats.

10. Next Meeting

  1. pm next thursday in the Bunker. Location to be decided from there.

1. Gaming Sign

It was proposed that a sign be made for gaming sessions, to put on the door to warn non-members of what is going on, so they don’t walk in, look confused and lost and disturb people. Jake to create.

2. Mail Forwarding

A success but for two small mishaps. One, of course, is the 1000+ mails forwarding fiasco. The other is that certain presidents of the computing society, not mentioning any names, occasionally forget to log in to ‘suada’ before replying. Everyone needs to remember to use the Exec account to reply to mail, firstly so that the reply also doesn’t get braodcast to the exec, but more importantly so that the person replied to doesn’t get seven disparate eMails.

3. Any More Training?

It was decided that, whilst there /may/ be a /little/ more training required, we would wait until the Union told us rather than go looking for trouble.

4. OpenSource Project

Next Meeting the License should be decided, (and the room should be booked. Chris.) and also the possibility of CVS (or a Sourceforge account) and a Majordomo list set up.

5. LAN Party

LAN starts at 11 on Saturday. Chris Salmon to open up, bring IP cards and organise. Baz to bring network sheets, and tell Chris how to do the network. Chris to bloody well listen.

6. Paintball

Notify members of Paintball soc. crossover. Checks to be taken by the exec or pinned on the Compsoc noticeboard.

7. Laserquest

Filmsoc challenge on Tuesday of Wk6. It was decided that a normal signup but with a lower capacity would suffice.

8. Weekend Gaming

Chris Smith will be present on Friday only, Chris Salmon and Jake will be present both evenings. Airport before Friday gaming (9pm) but not Saturday – LAN too close. Also it was decided to implement a rigid Kick-out-then-login-all-machines-then-let-members-in policy, to avoid /any/ trouble that might otherwise be caused. This is especially useful as it means we have the chance to reset and re-login machines that have been locked or whatever in someone’s account. Adam to be ignored when he makes a fuss.

9. Gaming/DM7

Jake to obtain Quake DM7 for gaming.

10. Gaming/Counter-Strike

It was proposed that a ‘Counter-strike’ and ‘Non-Counter-strike’ division be made to our weekend gaming. Like this, people who don’t play CS but find their like scattered ‘cross the two sessions can band together in hope of actually getting a decent game of Quake. Or whatever.

11. Java

It was suggested and agreed with that the Java course/s on ‘The Bits 118 Doesn’t Teach You’ should take place starting Week 11, the beginning of the second term. They should start with a quick reiteration of the 118 course, so that people unfamiliar with Java can catch up, then proceed into lecture-format sessions with titles like ‘API – Things you should know’ &/ ‘Getting to Grips with GUIs’. Chris Salmon to be banned from titling the actual lectures – unanimous amongst eligible voters. These should then be followed with workshop-style sessions, where people can ask questions and generally interface a bit more.

12. Money

Chris (Salmon) needs to get together with Chris (Smith) and rationalise our resources.

13. Bowling

The idea of this Tuesday session needs to be looked into. Ryan best to do this, as he lives close to the arena.

14. Next Meeting

Meet in the Unix Bunker, at 5, on thursday, to discuss where to hold meeting. Xanana’s was nice but too loud and cramped, The Varsity has gone a little downhill, and Cholo is blatantly not on. As is the Piazza, for that matter.

1. Flyers

Chris Smith wanted it minuted that he was impressed with the flyers. (Used to spam first year CS pigeonholes)

2. Fresher’s Fayre

Was a vast success. Total members at last count was 168.

3. Mike

Joined the society. Also turned up for meeting.

4. Cards

As only 150 membership cards were printed for the societies fair, and we signed up 168 members, more cards are needed. Many members were given yellow slips marked ‘Card To Be Issued’. Chris Smith to print more inserts (as the ITS laser printer is OOO) and Ryan to bring the plastic covers to the first social.

5. South Central

First Social to be held in South Central on Wednesday (11th) 7–8pm. Ryan to confirm booking.

6. Confirm Booking

Jake to Confirm booking of Gaming, Friday and Saturday, room 019 (reverting to room 011 when it is finished) 10pm to 4am.

7. EMail

Mike suggested that all exec members should be forwarded the message when the Compsoc exec account is mailed to. Exec will then have to log in to the exec account if they want to reply. (and also check if anyone else has replied already) Mike to implement.

8. Training

Chris Salmon and Ryan report that the union training on the previous Saturday was a farce. In fact, contrary to the Chris Smith report the previous day, there was no effective restriction to two exec members. Chris Smith owned up that he had been sold this pack of lies by a Sports Club exec member.

9. Socials

It was noted that we need to kick off our social calendar – a LAN Party, OpenSource meeting and Laserquest outing were put forward as good first-few-weeks contenders.

10. LQ Challenge

It was decided that instead of meeting a challenge from Filmsoc we should first have a Compsoc Laserquest social, then pick out the keen &/ good players to participate in the inter-society game.

11. Pre-Gaming Drinking

It was noted that at the end of last term, the Pre-Gaming drinking in the airport tended not to happen in a big way. It was decided to drill into the heads of this year’s freshers that it is a standard part of the event and not to be missed.

12. Open Source

Meeting proposed for 7–8pm on Sunday, then on to the Airport. Ryan to book. Jake to bring along documentation worked on over summer and project plan. Chris Salmon to bring general aura of authority.

13. LAN Party

LAN party proposed from 11— on saturday (till however late the Union will let us have the room). One of the two-part rooms is needed, since attendance is expected to be high. Ryan to book.

14. Bowling

Suggested for Tuesday evening, Week 4. Ryan to look into it.

15. Allnighter

Needs to be booked early – suggested Saturday to Sunday of Week 7. Chris Salmon to look into booking it.

16. Carried Over Stuff

The following items were carried over from last week and need to be carried over to next week:
* Budget Form – Still no news. (Ryan)
* Karting – Still looking into (Baz)
* Paintball – No Reply (Chris Salmon)

17. Union Training/Resources/Etc.

It was suggested by Mike that as the society has a wealth of computing knowledge/skill to delve into we may be able to in some way offer these services to the Union, who run regular training (etc.) sessions. The idea was discussed but no conclusion reached. The consensus seemed to be that as the Union pays the trainers, they would be reluctant to hire from a student society.

18. Locker/Pigeonhole

Baz offered the use of his locker to the society, as the main thing we need to store – old PCF issues – will easily fit in and anything Baz may want to store – spare computers, say – won’t. Mike observed that we could store small quantities of things in his office. No news on a pigeonhole, however.

19 Room ???

In the course of discussion it was observed that DCS may be willing to allow the Computing Society to use an office, to prevent other departments moving people into all the empty rooms in their new building. The idea was discussed, the general consensus being that it is still highly unlikely, but not unworthy of pursuing. We would need to put in a reasoned proposal, so all exec members are to consider two main points:
* What would we use the office for? Meetings in DCS may discriminate against non-CS exec members – we would have to restrict use of the office to the daytime. The possibility of putting a server in one was raised – It was thought that DCS would more likely give us a server than an office, but only if we asked for something bigger than a server…
* What do we offer DCS? (See next point)

20. Help DCS/University

It was suggested that the Computing Society may be able to help DCS/The university as a whole by running Java programming tutorials, focusing on the areas that the DCS course doesn’t cover – eg use of the API. These would of course be open to people outside of CS courses as an introduction to programming. Jake to confer with Steve Jarvis (who runs CS118) on how happy DCS would be about the idea. It was also observed that in other Universities, the computing society takes a dominant role in the running of the Onion computing services. It was suggested that we might take one of two courses of action: 1: March into the Union Resources Room and claim it in the name of the UoW Computing Society 2: Propose to the Union that, since we have a wealth of computing expertise at our fingertips and they quite obviously don’t, that perhaps we could help them with the running, on a volunteer basis, of a portion of the Union computing resources. The matter needs to be discussed further.

21. Gaming

Firstly, the following Exec will be turning up to the following gaming sessions: Friday**Saturday Chris SalmonChris Salmon Jake StainesJake Staines Chris Smith (Start)Chris Smith (Possibly) Phil Ross
Creation of CDs ready to use for easy startup is delegated thus:
* Half-Life, Counter-Strike and TFC – Chris to master, Baz to burn a run.
* Quake and Lightbikes – Jake to create
* Total Annihilation – Chris Smith to create
These CDs should be set up with a batch file that installs everything for the user so that the installation time is reduced as much as possible.

22. The Word

It was proposed and decided that we submit our events to The Word for inclusion in their societies calendar – Ryan to find, fill in and return the relevant form/s.

23. Next Meeting

It was suggested that we try Xanana’s for the next meeting – meet at 5 on thursday (19th) in the adjoining room.

0. Minutes

Chris Salmon, as his first Act Of Iron Dominance for the year he serves as president, decreed that the Minutes should bve written up /without/ the vernacular humour that graced earlier editions. The Secretary and Vice President noted that this institution was in fact started by him, but nonetheless, terms such as ‘Jedi Persuasion’ shall be now absent from the minutes writeup, and the minutes shall correctly be correctly spelt and not referred to as the ‘minnits’.

1. Science Ball

Ryan is still atop the Science Ball issue – there is allegedly a meeting tomorrow (3/10/00) which he will attempt to attend.

2. Exec Roles

Chris Salmon proposed that the roles of the various members of the exec be better defined so as to allow people to refer tasks to the correct exec member with greater ease. The roles were discussed and definded as thus:
* President: Issuing Orders and Decrees, generally overseeing everything and issuing those little slips of paper with the IP address on at LAN parties.
* Vice President: Ensuring said Orders and Decrees are actrually carried out and performing miscellaneous non-labour-intensive tasks.
* Secretary: Taking minutes at exec meetings and the funnelling of information from and around the collective exec to the general membership.
* Technical Consultant: Providing technical assitance at computer-related socials such as LAN parties or allnighters, and answering any technical questions asked of the society.
* Webmaster: Relaying information supplied by the Secretary onto the Website, administering the online signup for socials, and maintaining the society webpage in any other manner appropriate.

3. Web Signup

Phil notified us that the new web signup was now almost in place, and functioned essentially the same as the old one, except that the number of subscriptions to an event was unlimited, allowing people to sign up /in case others drop out later/, and a login has been added to prevent one member signing up multiple times or non-members signing up.

4. Finance

It was noted that the society did not have a copy of the budget form for this year. Ryan to obtain one.

5. Fresher’s Fayre

Several things need to be done before the Fresher’s Fayre. Namely:
* Find out when it is. – Chris Smith
* Obtain a board (via the registration form – Jake to hand in)
* Print a Banner for the society stall – Baz
* Blow up (as in; expand) pages from the booklet to pin on the backboard – Chris Smith
* Print photos&/Screenshots for backboard – Chris Smith
* Buy Biros – 10*12p – Ryan
* Bring Ice Cream Cointainer – Chris Smith
* Create sheets with columns for Name, Uni No., Usercode, Member No. (in greyed out section – for official use only), Details on web, Preferred email – Chris Salmon
The procedure for signing up new members will be as follows:
* Give new member sheet (as detailed above) to fill in their details
* Take money
* Fill in top half of membership book
* Fill in membership card (plastic covered one) fold over and give to new member.
* Give booklet to member and point out the ‘First’ social to them.

Lastly, Jake to talk to any interested in helping at the fresher’s fayre to bring them up to speed.

6. First Social

The ‘first’ social of the term, The Induction Social, will be held in South Central, Wednesday of week II, from 7 to 8pm. Jake to mail society/newsgroup announcing.

7. Flyers

With the objective of getting new members from this year’s Computer Science first years, Jake to design third-of-A4 flyer to stick in pigeonholes. Print master and then give to Ryan, who will make 206 copies (one for each pigeonhole) and distribute.

8. Gaming

Baz to mail ITS and ask about gaming sessions, before we start to advertise them. Room 011 is currently closed – we need to know if this will be open on time, or if we can have a different similarly sized room, and if the 10pm-4am friday & saturday is still OK.

9. Poster Campaign

Pending the OK from Baz, Chris Salmon to design a ‘Come to the first Gaming Session’ poster, to make a limited run of and position strategically across campus.

10. Training

There is a union training session on Saturday (7/10/00) in the cooler at 11am to 3:15pm. All exec members present have agreed to attend, and an impromptu-but-not-impromptu meeting will be held afterwards.

11. DCS

Members are hereby advised that DCS is not finished yet. In case anyone hadn’t noticed. The new DCS building is behind the engineering building by Car Park 15.

12. Socials

New Socials mooted are Paintball and Karting, with Chris Salmon and Baz to investigate respectively, the perennial favourite of Laserquest will be visited soon, probably in week 3. Pub socials will abound, starting before the first gaming session. All exec members are encouraged to enthuse the membership with this idea in a bid to get more people turning up to anything that isn’t gaming.

13. Next Meeting

The next meeting will be held on Saturday, 3:15, in the cooler. Another meeting will be scheduled at that time.
