1. Minnit Content

/“This is all my fault”/ – Chris Salmon
The minutes should, in future,
* be Less Terse (if possible)
* focus the decision making progress (if plausible)
and
* /“Fun comes after the minutes”/ – Chris Salmon (if palatable)
* The numbering shall henceforth be in hexadecimal, to make it easier for Jake to type up.
These obviously apply more to the meetings themselves and how they should adhere to the ideals of the minnits, and therefore the minnitkeeper himself is no way to fault in the aforeshadowed problems.

2. CS Tourney

Posters have been put up in CSV, and some have been submitted to the Onion. Since it had been offered on the posters and previous correspondence, a Cash Money Prize shall be given to the winners of the tournament. The runners up – those in second place – will be given the bubble-wrap not awarded at the abortive Quiz attempt at the previous pub social.

3. Snap Decisions

We need to assign a member of the exec to every item that needs following up – they will then have final authority over any decisions made over that item, to try and prevent any snap decisions such as the one that led to an entry fee for the CS tourney. This same person is also responsible for that item, be it social, mineral or animal, and can be held accountable for anything that might happen to go wrong with it. If a decision needs to be made and no other members of the exec are present, and it was either not covered or undecided previously, the chosen path should be mailed to the other exec for veto, and given at least until the end of the day, more if possible for anyone to object.

4. Allnighter

Virus

The society shall reccomend that all members turning up to a LAN of any kind at the very least scans their computer beforehand, and preferrably installs an intercept-and-detect virus scanner. We accept no responsibility for any virus problems (as we have always refused to) but will make the ‘magic bullet’ disks available and point members to free or cheap virus scanners.

Games

It would be a good idea to start a newsgoup discussion before an event to try and decide which games will be most popular, so people can install them and patch them up beforehand. This will not stop people installing and patching at LANs, but should cut down on the number of files transferred over the network.

Networking

From now on, we really need to treat BNC as outdated, and assume most people will have CAT5 network cards. The society (well, Baz and Jake) can lend people 10Mbit RJ45 network cards, and possibly cable, and a lot of cards these days are combos anyway. This will help the setup of the networking at LANs significantly, seeing as one of the biggest problems we faced at the Allnighter was joining the BNC -based network onto the CAT5-based network.

5. Switch

Jake to grab Ryan in lectures and keep snapping bones until he agrees to sort out this Switch purchase. Baz to mail Ryan with the details. Ryan to perform purchase of switch at first opportunity.

6. Pub Socials

Hold a pub social on the weekend of week 9 in the airport. Sunday from 8 onwards – just after the OpenSource project meeting.

7. LAN Party

The idea of holding another LAN before the end of term was mooted – unfortunately, however, it was thought that it was really unfeasible to get one going and to have enough people turn up this close to the end of term.

8. T-Shirts

Chris Smith and Jake to look into the possibility of T-Shirts from a variety of sources for the society or for society events.

9. Console Society

The recently-formed console society has been going under the name of ‘The Computer Console Society’ and has the email address of ‘Compconsoc’ or something similar. This leads to potential confusion seeing as their name is so similar to ours. Also, they recently ran a Goldeneye Tournament – this is something we did last year, and were thinking of repeating – certainly many of our members would be interested. Whilst we don’t want to shut them down or kill them all or anything, it would certainly be nice if they would
* Change their name (or at least their eMail address) so it’s not so similar to ours. Dropping the ‘Computer’ would be best since Consoles aren’t really ‘computers’ anyway.
* Tell us when they are arranging events that our members may be interested in so we can coordinate with them and recommend the events to our members.

Complying with these simple steps will help their exec avoid potential unfortunate fatal accidents. Or something. Chris Smith to eMail the society in question to ask for their cooperation.

10. Photos

Chris Smith to mail Phil photographs from the last few Compsoc socials to place prominently on the compsoc website. Especially the one of Chris Salmon in a ditch.

11. OpenSource Project

The OpenSource project is generally going well. We do, however, really need a bit of a hand with the website, so we don’t have to worry about too much stuff (and remember too many passwords…)

12. Next Meeting

Shall be held at 11o’clock on friday, meeting up in the Bitchtank again. Unfortunately there isn’t really any time the rest of us can meet up that Mike can also attend.

1. Allnighter

Seeing as Baz is going, and Tom (Worley) is going, we will have enough hubs, and a BNC uplink. Henry (Southgate) is bringing a Linux box to use as a bridge, so we should be able to configure the network quite easily.

2. Switch

So far, unfortunately, no progress has been made on a switch. Baz to jump up and down upon Ryan to get him to hurry up.

3. Pub Social

The proposed Quiz to be held at the Pub Social will have as a prize a roll of bubblewrap. Jake to obtain bubblewrap.

4. Gaming

Friday gaming can continue despite the allnighter, since exec members can turn up and supervise. Richard Colfer has offered to conduct Saturday’s gaming if anybody does turn up.

5. Java Tutorial

Chris to actually get on and really actually /write/ something instead of pontificating on how wonderful it will all be.

6. Courses

We may need to do some more Onion courses. Suggestions so far are:
* First Aid – Ryan?
* Duty of Care – ?
* How to Use Your Onion – Jake

7. Antichris

Denies all knowledge. 4 for, 1 abst. 5 present. Upon recount, 5 for, 1 abst. 5 present.

8. Next Meeting

  1. am on Friday morning next week, in the Bitchtank.

1. Switch

Baz has details on the switch we plan to buy – to give these to Ryan and organise the purchase of said piece of equipment.

2. Allnighter

Given the time until the allnighter, it would be a good idea to announce it despite the fact that the room booking has not been confirmed yet. Chris Smith will bring a DVD movie

3. Ale and Whores

Unfortunately, both of the above are barred from the room used for the Allnighter. As well as food. This means we will have to restrict eating and drinking to outside of the rooms.

4. Money

Chris to give The Onion the money we still need to give them, along with the last book of cards.

5. Cards

Several members have still not recieved laminated membership cards. Whilst – if they are not going to turn up to any events – these are not needed, next time a newsletter is sent out, a note should be included reminding members that laminated cards are available and can be picked up at any social.

6. Java Tutorials

Chris Salmon, since he knows more Java than anyone else willing to, is to write the scriptsnotes/other material for the proposed Java Tutorials.

7. Magazines and Budget

Despite Ryan’s best inquisitive efforts, there is still no news on the magazines or the budget. The exec decides to blame The Onion, for it is undoubtedly their fault.

8. CS 1.0

Chris Salmon to download Counter-Strike 1.0 for gaming sessions – we more than likely to not need to purchase the boxed game, since the download is supposedly the same.

9. OpenSource Project

It was collectively agreed that never, never agin would we hold an OpenSource meeting on a monday. Jake, when he has time, to put together a CD of stuff for people participating. Contents to be decided at one of the meetings.

10. Pub Social

Thursday next week we will hold another Pub Social – starting in the Graduate at 8pm onwards, we will try and make it more of a crawl.

11. Allnighter

For the weekend of the Allnighter, we will cancel the regular gaming. This will serve two purposes – firstly, it may encourage more people to turn up to the allnighter. Secondly, it means that nobody has to supervise the gaming.

12. Next Meeting

Thursday at 2pm, in the Bitchtank.

1. LAN

Barry found a good deal on an 8-way switch – and whilst the particular price he found was a limited-time offer, it was decided that it would be a good idea to get one. Kit comes with three network cards and three lengths of cable. Barry to talk to Ryan and start purchase.

2. Java Tutorials

Chris Salmon managed to do nothng at all. Jake to talk to Jarvis instead, since he actually /will/ instead of sitting around doing nothing for a whole week.

3. Magazines/Budget

Still no official word on the budget. Ryan to investigate both this and the worrying lack of any magazines received from the society’s subscription to PC Format.

4. ITS011

Jake to talk to ITS over rooms 011/018. Best result possible of course is that we could use both rooms – but of course we don’t expect this to be possible. We would prefer to end up in ITS011, since the computers in there are more powerful, despite there being two less.

5. Allnighter

Still no response form the room booking form we submitted. Chris Salmon to investigate just what /has/ happened.

6. McCarthy/CS Tourney

James M still hasn’t contacted us on the subject of the proposed Counter-Strike tournament. Chris Smith to follow him up on it. Make it an open event – 50p entry to non-members, free for members. Chris also to talk to Coventry GAME in hopes of getting sponsorship.

7. LaserQuest

Chris Salmon to book LaserQuest (20 spaces) for Filmsoc crossover.

8. Gaming

Phil will possibly turn up on Saturday, and Chris Smith may turn up on Friday. Jake to turn up to both days.

9. Membership

Chris Smith to fill in and put cards in relevant pigeonholes in DCS for those still to receive cards, since Chris Salmon is away this weekend.

10. Distributed.net

It was decided that the proposed project and website was not in the interest of the society as a whole. Furthermore, we do not have CGI permissions on our webspace anyway. Phil to politely decline involvement.

11. Industry

The idea was raised to gather contacts in Industry to help set members up with summer jobs. Unfortuantely, the topic of conversation moved too quickly to come to any solid conclusions on the matter.

12. Science Ball

The Science Ball is on – Ryan informs us that a venue has been booked in Birmingham, with 400 dinner tickets and 150 after-dinner tickets, a provisional price of £40 and £20 respectively (£2 surcharge for non-society or faculty members) – lowered depending on sponsorship, which has yet to be gathered and totalled.

13. Karting

Henry Southgate has supplied us with some information on a local Karting track – however, any way around the prices appear to be approximately £1 a minute for track time. If we go ahead with Karting, it is clear that we will need to have a decent attendance, and will probably go for one of the simpler not too ocmpetetive options, so those who have not been before do not get worse value for money than regulars. We will also need to ask for deposits, to discourage people from signing up but not turning up.

14. Bowling

To be put off (again…) till next time.

15. Next Meeting

Meet up in the Bunker at 6pm (not 5) on Thursday.
